The plan was published on August 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Digital Yuan Takes Priority in PBOC\u2019s 2026\u20132030 Plan <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the blueprint, the central bank intends to improve financial infrastructure while strengthening areas such as payment services, credit reporting and anti-money-laundering systems. The digital yuan is expected to play a growing role within this financial ecosystem as China expands its digital payment capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes after the PBOC introduced major changes to the way the digital yuan operates in 2026. From January 1, commercial banks have been permitted to pay interest on customers\u2019 e-CNY balances. The change moves the digital currency closer to the banking system and gives it characteristics beyond those of traditional digital cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China is also looking to expand the digital yuan\u2019s use beyond its domestic market. The PBOC\u2019s latest plan calls for wider use of the renminbi in international trade and investment, along with stronger cross-border payment infrastructure and development of offshore yuan markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Singapore Payment and Project mBridge Test e-CNY Use <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent projects indicate that Beijing is already testing these capabilities. China has completed a cross-border digital yuan payment with Singapore, while Project mBridge is being used to explore faster and more efficient cross-border settlement. The platform involves central banks and financial institutions from several jurisdictions, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guangdong has also proposed expanding cross-border digital yuan trials and increasing the number of use cases for the currency. These initiatives could help China connect its domestic digital payment infrastructure with international trade and settlement networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategy forms part of a wider effort to strengthen the renminbi\u2019s position in global finance. The PBOC has said it will work to expand the currency\u2019s international use while maintaining exchange-rate stability and supporting further opening of China\u2019s financial sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s approach remains cautious, but the latest five-year plan signals that the digital yuan is no longer simply a payment experiment.
